Stainless steel water filter!
Anything that is generally described as stainless steel, rust-free steel or “non-rusting” steel dates back almost 100 years. It all started in 1912 when a patent was filed for steels with „high resistance against corrosion”. Over the years, a group of more than 120 different types of stainless steels has been developed.
The advantages for the drinking water segment are as follows:
Why is stainless steel so robust?
All stainless steels have a ferrous alloy with a minimum chromate proportion of 12%. The contact with oxygen from the contact substances (e.g. water and air etc.) forms a thin layer of chromium oxide – just a few atoms thick - on the stainless steel surface (passivation). The protective layer protects the steel below from the effects of chemicals.
If the stainless steel surface is damaged, this so-called passive layer is independently reformed through oxygen. Thus, it is „self-healing“; stainless steel has a built-in „self-repair mechanism“. This characteristic is very similar to water.
What stainless steel does our filter use?
On the AquaAvanti Neptuno/Nautilus, the water-bearing parts are made of high-quality types 1.4404 and 1.4571. These types offer good protection against localised corrosion and have been used in water supplies, the food industry and pharmaceuticals for decades. Even after several years, the surfaces can still be hygienically cleaned – in extreme cases the surface can be reground or polished (particularly inside the filter housing). The smoothness of the stainless steel surface helps to prevent and reduce sedimentation and the formation of biofilms. Unlike stainless steel, some synthetic surfaces can be partially damaged by the biofilm and in some cases are even „eaten up“.
